Recently, we have been to one of Belgium’s most unique natural landscapes — the High Fens–Eifel Nature Park (NL: Hoge Venen, FR: Hautes Fagnes) again. It turned out to be one of those hikes that surprises you at every step, with changing scenery and peaceful, untouched nature.
📍 Where is the High Fens–Eifel Nature Park?
The park is located in the east of Belgium, in the province of Liège, right along the German border. It’s part of a large cross-border nature reserve shared with Germany.
This region sits between the Ardennes and the Eifel hills and is known for its rare peat bogs, moorlands, forests, and rolling hills formed thousands of years ago.
It's about 140-165 km from Brussels (~1,5-2h drive) and about 185 km from Antwerp (~2h drive). Although reachable by public transportation (train to Eupen/Leuven + bus), it's not very flexible and efficient, so we'd recommend avoiding it if possible.

🥾 Hiking trails & accessibility
The park is a paradise for hikers, with 30+ marked hiking trails and routes ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Typical hikes starting from 7 km and up.
There are:
- Short, flat boardwalk routes (great for beginners or families)
- Longer loops through forests and hills
- Scenic routes like the Vennrunde loop (~8–9 km)
👉 Yes — it’s definitely suitable for all ages, as long as you pick the right trail.

🌲 Our hiking experience
What made our hike very interesting was how the landscape kept changing:
- Wooden paths floating over wetlands (a must-see!!)
- Open moorlands with wide skies
- Dense forests with fresh pine scents
- Gentle hills offering beautiful viewpoints
At one point, we climbed up a hill, and the view over the surrounding nature was just stunning. The mix of elevation and flat stretches made the hike dynamic but still very enjoyable.
The atmosphere felt calm and almost mystical — especially with the vast open landscapes and quiet surroundings.

⛰️ The highest point in Belgium 🇧🇪
One of the highlights of our hike was passing through the highest point in Belgium:
📍 Signal de Botrange
📏 694 meters above sea level
There’s even a small tower you can climb to reach 700 m! Wow, it was breathtaking, like sitting on the top of the world (well, at least the top of Belgium 🤫😆).
Jokes aside, walking past this spot felt special since it’s not every day you stand on the “highest point of Belgium”.

💚 Final thoughts
We genuinely loved the entire hike. The High Fens is one of those places that feels completely different from the rest of Belgium; wilder, quieter, and more unique.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxed nature walk, planning a longer hiking adventure or just want to experience Belgium’s highest point.
👉 This place is absolutely worth visiting.
